Module 15: Draw Me a Star by Eric Carl

Citation:

Florian, D. (2003). Bow wow meow meow: It’s rhyming cats and dogs. Orlando, FL.: Harcourt.

Summary: This is a story about an artist, who draws a star, then the star asks for a sun and the story continues until the inanimate objects progress to people. The story eventually comes back to the star and the artist (an old man) takes a ride into the sky with the star. There is also a note from Eric Carle about how he got the idea from this book.

My Opinion: This is a simple story about an artist who creates a world. The illustrations are very similar to Eric Carle’s style. (I thought this book was sweet and innocent. However, I can see how there might be some parents who would complain.)

School Library Journal (October 1992)

K-Gr 4-- A young boy is told (readers are not sure by whom) to ``Draw me a star.'' The star then requests that the boy draw it a sun; the sun asks for a ``lovely tree,'' and throughout his life the boy/man/artist continues to create images that fill the world with beauty. The moon bids the now-elderly artist to draw another star, and as the story ends, the artist travels ``across the night sky'' hand-in-hand with the star. This book will appeal to readers of all ages; its stunning illustrations, spare text, and simple story line make it a good choice for story hour; but older children will also find it uplifting and meaningful. Especially pleasing is a diagram within the story, accompanied by rhyming instructions on how to draw a star: ``Down/ over/ left/ and right/ draw/ a star/ oh so/ bright.'' An inspired book in every sense of the word.-- Eve Larkin, Middleton Public Library , WI

Uses for the library:

I would use this story for my younger students to get them started on becoming authors. We would discuss ideas and how the ideas behind this book were simple. Then I would start to have them generate ideas for a book that they will write.

Module 14: Bow Wow Meow Meow by Doug Florian

Citation:

Florian, D. (2003). Bow wow meow meow: It’s rhyming cats and dogs. Orlando, FL.: Harcourt.

Summary: This book contains many poems about cats and dogs. The poems are fun and the illustrations help to convey the humors side of the poems.

My Opinion: This book of cat and dog rhymes has some of the most entertaining childlike illustrations. I feel that my students would really enjoy the rhymes and humor of each poem.

School Library Journal (May 1, 2003)

Gr 1-5-Twenty-one humorous poems and paintings about dogs, cats, the wolf, and a few large felines. Each spread features a poem and an accompanying impressionistic full-page illustration of the breed or animal. There are short poems ("I am a cat of longhaired version./A pet-igree that's known as purrrsian"), some a bit longer, and one that curls like poodles' hair. The language has flair, and the writing is zany and creative. The watercolor paintings in primarily pastel colors are great fun, revealing an attribute or the character of each animal. This is a delightful selection to read aloud to younger children, and it offers older students models of simple poems that really work. A definite contender for "best in show."-Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Uses for the library:

I would use this book to discuss various types of poetry. I would then have the students write their own poems and 1 or 2 illustrations that could tie into the poem. *I would also like to put this on a bulletin board to have the students try to figure out which book it came from.

Module 13: Bone 8; Treasure Hunters by Jeff Smith

Summary: This graphic novel is the 8th book in the Bone series. 3 Bone creatures try to help keep the princess hidden from the guards that are trying to overtake the village. The encounter some twists and turns. The Bone creatures keep getting into trouble and looking for gold.

My Opinion: This graphic novel was fun and full of city politics. The characters are well developed and the Bone characters add a bit of playfulness to the storyline. The graphics are awesome and add to the dialogue. I can see why this series is so popular in my library.

Reviews:

Eckert, K. (2008, Februrary). [Review of the book Bone 8: Treasure Hunters]. Goodreads.com. Retrieved from http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/148325296

This is the eight book in the nine book Bone series by Jeff Smith. It was another excellent addition to this series and filled with more humor than the previous book, despite the darkness of parts of the tale.

The Bones along with Gran'ma Ben and Thorn have finally reached Atheia. Here they reunite with some of Gran'ma Ben's old friends. Atheia is under rule of a dictator like man and they need to decide if they can count on his help in the upcoming battle against the King of Locusts. Meanwhile Lucius and crew are also trying to make their way to Atheia through the Ghost Circles.

This was another great installment in this series. There was a lot more humor packed into this book than in the previous one. So, despite the darkness and serious surrounding the upcoming war, I found myself laughing out loud a number of times. It was great to be back with Thorn, Gran'ma Ben, and the Bones...I love how Thorn is young and funny but has moments where she is tough as nails.

I have been missing the inclusion of the Dragons some; I was hoping they would feature more in these later books but mostly they are just talked about.

The book ended well but I am very eager to see how things are wrapped up in the ninth book, Crown of Horns. The illustration is as excellent as ever and remains consistent with previous books.

Overall I loved this book and can't wait to read Crown of Horns to see how things wrap up.

Uses for the library:

I would use this graphic novel to introduce different types of materials within the library. Many students love this format. I would have student create a flip book of graphic novels. Then the students could act out the storyline that they wrote.
